About Akagera National Park

Akagera National Park, located in eastern Rwanda along the border with Tanzania, is the country’s largest protected wetland and the last remaining savannah ecosystem in Rwanda. Covering approximately 1,122 square kilometers, the park is named after the Akagera River, which flows along its eastern boundary. Akagera is home to diverse landscapes, including open savannah, woodland, lakes, and swamps, making it a haven for wildlife. It boasts the "Big Five" (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhinoceros) along with zebras, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, and a variety of bird species, including the rare shoebill stork. Managed by the Rwanda Development Board in partnership with African Parks, Akagera has undergone significant conservation efforts, leading to the successful reintroduction of lions and rhinos. The park offers game drives, boat safaris, birdwatching, and cultural experiences, making it a prime destination for nature and wildlife enthusiasts.
